What documents are required to sit the practical driving test?

Only people who have a valid driver’s license are allowed to drive. It can be obtained after completing training at a driving school and passing exams. First comes the theoretical exam, then the practical one. The driving test is the final stage in obtaining a driver’s license. It is conducted at a service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine under the supervision of an examiner. The candidate demonstrates the ability to operate a vehicle and knowledge of traffic rules, as well as safe driving skills in real conditions. A license is issued only after successfully passing the exam. However, to be admitted to the exam, it is not enough to know how to drive — you must also provide the required documents after completing driving school.

Who is allowed to take the practical exam

In Ukraine, there are specific rules stating that a person can only drive a vehicle after reaching a certain age. The required age depends on the vehicle category. For example, category B (cars) is available from age 18, while category A (motorcycles) is available from age 16.

In addition to age, candidates must meet several requirements. To be admitted to the practical exam, you must:

  • complete training at an accredited driving school;
  • receive a certificate of completion;
  • pass the theoretical exam on the official portal of the Ministry of Internal Affairs service center;
  • have a valid medical certificate (form 083/o) confirming fitness to drive;
  • register for the practical exam.

It is worth noting that the theoretical part can be studied independently without attending a driving school. Official traffic rules are sufficient for preparation. However, driving schools provide more structured training, real-life examples, and instructor support.

Documents required for the practical exam

Before registering at the service center, it is important to know what documents are required in addition to driving school training. The basic requirement is to provide a full set of documents, including:

  • Ukrainian passport or ID card;
  • tax identification number (TIN);
  • medical certificate form 083/o;
  • driving school completion certificate;
  • exam admission card or permit;
  • proof of payment for administrative services (if required).

Before visiting the service center, check that all documents are valid, especially the medical certificate, which has an expiration date. It is recommended to undergo a medical check shortly before the exam.

Features of the practical driving exam

First, you must register for the exam — either online or at the service center. A specific date and time slot is usually assigned.

On the exam day, the candidate must arrive on time. The goal of the exam is to assess the ability to drive safely in real traffic conditions. These skills are developed during practical training with an instructor. The vehicle may be provided either by the service center or the driving school.

Typically, the process looks like this (example based on “Pilot” driving school):

  1. Document check: verification of all required papers, theoretical results, and medical clearance.
  2. Manoeuvres on a closed area: parking, reversing, and vehicle control exercises.
  3. City driving in real traffic conditions.
  4. Error assessment.

Main evaluation criteria include: compliance with traffic rules, speed limits, road signs and markings, use of indicators, and lane changes. The candidate is also informed about the results.

The exam is considered failed if:

  • more than three mistakes are made;
  • an accident or dangerous situation is created requiring examiner intervention;
  • the candidate refuses to perform tasks (except when instructions contradict traffic rules).

If failed, the next attempt is allowed no earlier than 10 days after the exam.

Tips for future drivers

The key to passing the exam is proper preparation. It is important to choose a reliable driving course.

Before the exam, revise traffic rules and practice difficult routes with an instructor. Also ensure all documents are valid and arrive on time.

A common issue is the difference between training and exam vehicles. Differences in size, pedals, and response can affect performance. It is better to take the exam in a familiar car.

Another common problem is stress. Proper preparation and regular practice help reduce it significantly.
