Losing a driver's license is a serious problem for someone who frequently drives. After all, not having the document on hand can lead to problems during police checks. However, losing your license is not a critical situation, as the document can be restored. In Ukraine, there is a simple and clear procedure to resolve this situation, using not just one, but several methods: online or offline. The process takes little time, and the application can be submitted through state electronic services. We will explain how to restore a driver's license and what to do in case of loss – read on.
What to do if your license was stolen
The first thing a driver who has lost their license should do is to make sure exactly how it disappeared. Perhaps it is not lost, but just lying somewhere at home or left in the pocket of other clothes. If the driver has indeed lost their driver's license or there is a possibility that it was stolen, it is worth contacting the police and registering the report.
After that, you can choose the most convenient way to get a new document. How to restore a lost driver's license? To do this, you need to submit an application. This can be done in person at a Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) service center or online through electronic services.
Ways to restore a driver's license
There are several offline and online application options available in case of license loss:
- Through an MIA service center.
- Through the Diia app.
- Through the electronic Driver's Cabinet.
All methods are effective and accessible to everyone. Regardless of the chosen method, a new license is issued after data verification. Usually, information in the MIA database is checked to see if the driver's license is registered to a specific person, its validity period, and the presence of any violations. Restored driver's licenses have the same legal force as the lost ones.
Important: if the license was not lost, but confiscated due to a traffic violation, and the suspension period is still ongoing, or if you need to retake the exams to obtain the license, it will not be possible to restore the document as valid and use it. Information about this is also available in the registries and is necessarily checked during document restoration.
What documents need to be prepared
To restore a driver's license, you usually do not need to undergo a medical examination or take exams. However, you need to gather certain documents:
- a passport or other identity document;
- RNOKPP – taxpayer identification number (TIN);
- an application for the restoration of the driver's license.
When applying online, the passport and TIN are automatically pulled from state registries, so in this case, you do not need to provide them anywhere.
Important: if you need to restore the document after confiscation, and the law requires a repeated medical examination or retaking the exam, you will have to complete these procedures before receiving the new license. Only after providing the relevant documents (medical certificate or exam results) will the new license be issued.

Cost and duration of the license restoration process
The procedure is quite fast and accessible. The cost can be found out at the service center (SC). When submitting an application through Diia or an MIA service center, payment details and the amount will be displayed automatically. When applying online, payment can be made via internet banking.
The time it takes to produce a new driver's license is short – a few days. The restoration speed depends on the method chosen for processing and receiving the license. Once the document is ready, the applicant receives a notification and can either pick it up at the service center or order delivery via postal operators, if such a service is available.
